PRESS RELEASE State Police are investigating an ATV crash that occurred August 27, 2023, at 6:46 p.m., on Top Notch Road in the town of Fairfield, Herkimer County. The preliminary investigation has determined an Artic Cat TRV 500 ATV, operated by Kira M. Miller, age 44 from Little Falls, NY along with a passenger, 23-year-old Patrick E. Reardon, from Little Falls, NY were traveling westbound on Top Notch Road at a high rate of speed when Miller drove off the roadway, and struck an earth embankment. Both occupants were ejected from the ATV. Miller was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for a serious head injury. Reardon was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. PRESS RELEASE On August 14, 2023, troopers and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation from SP Horseheads responded to a fatal motorcycle accident on Smith Road in the town of Veteran. Patrick L. Hess, age 45, from Cayuta, NY, was operating a 1995 Honda motorcycle eastbound on Smith Road when he struck a deer causing him to exit the south side of the roadway into the ditch. A passerby discovered the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m. and contacted emergency personnel. Responding personnel arrived, however, did not perform life-saving measures after discovering Hess succumbed to his injuries. Subsequent to an investigation, a black P80 Polymer Ghost 9mm handgun was located inside the vehicle. Irishura Ezekiel, age 21, of Rochester, NY, was arrested for Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd: Loaded Firearm (C Felony). Ezekiel was transported to SP Horseheads for processing. PRESS RELEASE On August 12, 2023, State Police members arrested Mark D. Chick, age 45, and Steven J. Bowen, age 30, both of Peru, NY for criminal possession of a controlled substance 3rd, criminal possession of a controlled substance 4th, criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th, and criminal use of drug paraphernalia. On August 12, 2023, around 10:34 p.m., Troopers observed a gray 2020 Chevrolet Malibu traveling on the Military Turnpike in the town of Plattsburgh. Trooper searched the license plate of the vehicle which indicated the registration was suspended. The Trooper initiated a traffic stop in the parking lot of Stewarts on Rugar Street in the town of Plattsburgh. The Troopers interviewed the driver, who was identified as Bowen, and the front passenger was identified a Chick. While interviewing both occupants they had conflicting stories, and the Troopers were granted verbal consent to search the vehicle. Troopers located crack cocaine and a digital scale that contained white powdery rock residue in the vehicle. BOWEN and Chick were arrested and transported to SP Plattsburgh for processing. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will host a public meeting on Aug. 23, to provide updates on project progress and future planning, address community concerns, and answer questions. Public and stakeholder participation is vital to the success of the rail trail project and will help inform future public communication needs. The public meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., in the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) Boardroom, 1133 NYS Route 86, Ray Brook. DEC Project Manager Keith Carrow will provide updates on project status, insight into future planning for signage and interpretation, and answer questions related to the project. Phase one of the Adirondack Rail Trail is under construction by Kubricky Construction and is scheduled to be completed this year. Phase two construction is underway by Rifenburg Construction and includes the portion of the trail between Saranac Lake and Floodwood Road in Santa Clara. On today’s date, June 16, 2023, at approximately 11:11 a.m. Trooper Richard Albert, assigned to the Cobleskill Interstate Patrol operating a marked State Police Vehicle, observed a silver SUV driving on I-88 Eastbound traveling over 100 MPH in the town of Duanesburg, NY. Trooper Albert conducted a traffic stop on the SUV, and upon approaching the driver’s side of the vehicle, the driver put the window down, and the passenger reached out the driver-side window and opened fire on Trooper Albert, striking him in his left upper arm. Trooper Albert returned fire. The shooter and a passenger exited the vehicle, and the shooter fled on foot. The passenger was taken into custody uninjured at the scene. The shooter has been identified as Nelson Troche, 32 of Schenectady, NY and was located approximately one and a half hours later in the area of Darby Hill Road in Duanesburg, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Troopers immediately provided medical aid until EMS arrived and transported him to Albany Medical Center via med flight, where he has since been declared deceased. Trooper Albert was transported to Ellis Hospital by State Police and has since been discharged. According to the Oneida County Sheriff, Robert Maciol, on Sunday, August 13th, at approximately 12:32 A.M., Sheriff Deputies responded to the intersection of State Route 8 and Babcock Hill Road, in the Town of Bridgewater for a one-car motor vehicle personal injury accident. After an investigation, it was determined that Caleb M. Pope, 18 years old of Clayville, was traveling in 2009 CADILLAC, West on Babcock Hill Road at a high rate of speed when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Route 8. When Pope failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Babcock Hill Rd and Route 8, the vehicle he was operating crossed both lanes of State Route 8 and struck a tree on the West side of the road causing it to overturn on its roof. Pope was evaluated on scene by emergency service personnel and signed off on any medical treatment, while a 17 male juvenile passenger was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Pope was issued citations for failing to stop at a stop sign and for failing to reduce speed for an intersection returnable to Bridgewater Town Court at a later date. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office was assisted on the scene by the Bridgewater Ambulance and the New York State Police.

According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, on August 12, 2023, at around 11:38 pm, Deputies responded to the area of Route 26 in the Town of Augusta for the report of a single motorcycle accident. Upon arrival, deputies determined David N. Rodriguez (40), of Bridgewater, was driving a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle, Northbound on Route 26 when he lost control around a corner, causing him to exit the roadway and strike a ditch. Rodriguez was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital to be evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries. No tickets issued at this time, pending investigation. The Oneida County Sheriff's Office was assisted on the scene by Oriskany Falls Fire Department.

On the evening of August 11th, 2023, law enforcement officials from the Utica Police Department were called to investigate a reported incident of gunshots fired in the vicinity of the 900 block of Lenox Ave. Upon their arrival, they discovered physical evidence of multiple expended shell casings and were informed that two male suspects were observed fleeing from the scene. Following a thorough investigation, it was revealed that the suspects had fled to a residence located on City St, and that a firearm may have been involved in the incident. With the necessary authority granted, Patrol Officers and Investigators from the GIVE unit proceeded to conduct a search of the premises, ultimately leading to the discovery of a loaded .32 caliber handgun. Subsequently, a 17-year-old male suspect claimed ownership of the weapon and was transported to the Utica Police Department for further questioning. Ultimately, the Juvenile Aid Unit charged him with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.
