- AgriAmerica Expands Grape Processing in Chautauqua County NY
FREDONIA, N.Y. — A long-dormant juice factory in the heart of Chautauqua County is bubbling back to life, thanks to a major investment from AgriAmerica Fruit Products LLC. Governor Kathy Hochul announced today that the company has completed a $2.5 million revitalization of a 69,000-square-foot grape juice processing plant at 200 Water Street in Fredonia, bringing new energy—and economic promise—to Western New York’s grape belt. The state-of-the-art facility now houses advanced grape processing machinery, expanding the region’s fruit production capacity and offering a powerful new resource for local grape farmers. The project, backed by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council, is expected to boost an already thriving grape industry that supports more than 1,900 jobs and generates a staggering $340 million in economic impact annually. “The expansion of AgriAmerica’s processing capabilities provides a much-needed production facility for Chautauqua County grape farmers,” said Governor Hochul. “We’re continuing to support the industries that make up the backbone of Upstate’s economy—agriculture, food manufacturing, and small-town innovation.” Since acquiring the site in 2018, AgriAmerica has worked to transform the once-idle factory into a hub of productivity and innovation. The facility had sat unused for several years until this multi-million-dollar overhaul breathed new life into it. Hope Knight, President and CEO of Empire State Development, added, “This is a shining example of what can happen when strategic investments meet local opportunity. AgriAmerica’s growth ensures local farmers have the support they need while fueling regional development.” With Western New York already recognized as a grape-growing powerhouse—home to vineyards that supply juice makers across the nation—this expansion promises to keep the region competitive and thriving for years to come. Stay tuned—Fredonia’s future just got a whole lot juicier. 🍇 https://esd.ny.gov/esd-media-center/press-releases/governor-hochul-announces-food-manufacturer-expanding-operations
- Guns, Meth, and Mechanicville: NY Man Gets Nearly 8 Years After Explosive Trial
ALBANY, NY — A Mechanicville man is headed to federal prison for nearly eight years after being convicted on a slate of drug and firearm charges stemming from a high-stakes meth distribution conspiracy that gripped his quiet New York neighborhood. Charles Brennan, 45 , was sentenced on Thursday, April 10 , to 97 months in prison following a dramatic four-day federal trial in September 2024. Prosecutors say Brennan wasn’t just a low-level dealer—he played a key role in a methamphetamine ring operating in Saratoga County between July and September 2022 . When federal agents raided Brennan’s residence, they discovered 9 grams of pure meth , eight firearms , and a stockpile of drug paraphernalia and ammunition . One of the weapons—a pistol—had its serial number deliberately obliterated , a serious red flag that drew sharp attention from federal firearms investigators. “This wasn’t just about drugs. This was about illegal firearms in the hands of someone operating in the shadows,” said U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III. The jury agreed, convicting Brennan on several key counts: conspiracy to distribute meth , distribution , possession with intent to distribute , and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number . However, Brennan dodged two charges for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime , with jurors returning not guilty on those counts. The sentence also includes four years of supervised release once Brennan completes his prison term. The investigation was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office , part of a broader push under the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative — a national strategy to target violent offenders and disrupt criminal networks at the local level. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashlyn Miranda , Joseph S. Hartunian , and Allen J. Vickey led the prosecution. For residents of Mechanicville and beyond, the case is a stark reminder that drug and gun trafficking isn't just a big city problem —it’s happening in small towns, too. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity as part of a community-wide effort to reduce violent crime . - DMV Reminds New Yorkers of Real ID Federal Deadline 1 Month Away
Today, the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) encouraged New Yorkers to get a REAL ID or Enhanced ID before the upcoming federal deadline on May 7, 2025. Starting then, everyone flying in the US will need a REAL ID, Enhanced ID, Passport or another form of federally compliant identification to fly domestically and enter certain federal facilities. There is no additional cost beyond the renewal fee to get a REAL ID. “If you have a flight in your near future, the time is now to get a REAL ID,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “We are just a few short weeks aways from the REAL ID deadline, and you can prevent the burden of delays by getting yours now. Making an appointment online is the best way to get in and out of a DMV office quickly.” Passed by Congress in 2005, the federal REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver licenses, permits and ID cards. It also requires customers to bring certain documents to the DMV to prove who they are and to have a new photograph taken before their REAL ID can be issued. DMV offices strongly encourage customers to make a reservation , which can be done online. To assist New Yorkers, the DMV has implemented several online tools such as a document guide and an online application pre-screening process to help them prepare. To avoid mistakes and prevent further delays, DMV advises customers to make sure that they provide appropriate proof of residency, with two items such as a current driver license or non-driver ID or a utility bill or pay stub with a current New York State address. Also, bring proof of your full legal name, and if you have had a name change through marriage or divorce, provide a marriage license or divorce decree that shows the connection. In addition to the REAL ID, the DMV offers an Enhanced ID which meets federal REAL ID standards. An Enhanced ID costs $30 extra and can be used as identification when returning to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean. A passport is also acceptable as a REAL ID-compliant document. For more information about REAL ID and Enhanced Driver Licenses, visit Enhanced or REAL ID and watch DMV's REAL ID instructional video on YouTube.
