We thank our first responders and firefighters for their bravery, and know that without them, this fire would be much worse.” Statewide, there are currently six wildfires in New York State encompassing nearly 6,031 acres, including the Jennings Creek/Sterling Forest State Park fire. The response to New York’s recent wildfires has included multiple agencies taking action to do the following: Department of Environmental Conservation Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers continue to lead New York’s multi-agency response to the wildfires at Jennings Creek/Sterling Forest State Park under Unified Command with New Jersey Forest Fire Service. Plan aheadby signing up for email air quality alerts here . Stay inside: Keep windows and doors closed to keep indoor air clean. If smoke gets inside, buy or make your own portable air cleaner to reduce particles indoors, or use HEPA air filters in your HVAC system. Wear a mask: If you must go out, a properly worn N95 mask can filter out large smoke particles, reducing the amount of PM you breathe in. Take it easy: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities that may cause you to breathe heavier. Protect the vulnerable: Caretakers of children, the elderly and those with asthma should be especially careful. When the AQI is elevated, be sure to limit their outdoor activities to keep them safe. Take care of four-legged friends: Keep outdoor trips with your pet brief to protect them from the same nose, eye, throat and lung irritation people experience. For people who spend time outdoors: When air quality is unhealthy, wearing a well-fitting face mask is recommended — a N95 or KN95 will work best. More information about the New York State Air Quality forecast is available here. Check your location's current air quality . New York State has implemented a statewide burn ban in effect until Nov. 30 due to increased fire risk. This burn ban prohibits the starting of outdoor fires statewide for purposes of brush and debris disposal, as well as uncontained campfires, and open fires used for cooking. Backyard fire pits and contained campfires less than three feet in height and four feet in length, width, or diameter are allowed, as are small, contained cooking fires. Burning garbage or leaves is prohibited year-round in New York State, and several municipalities have burn bans currently in effect.

- PORTABLE HOME DEVICE FOR EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER
(NewsUSA) - The ScanEase OneSense device is a screening tool for diagnosing breast cancer. The device facilitates an examination that is accessible to patients of any age and body type, allowing for self-examination due to its user-friendly design in the privacy of their home. The results help assess the risk of new tissue formations in the breast. The higher the risk factor on the BI-RADS scale, the greater the likelihood of malignant tissue degeneration. In light of this, the OneSense scanning device is recommended for the primary diagnosis of breast tumors in outpatient settings and for at-home self-examinations. The scan results are visible through an app on your smartphone, which will advise whether you should consult with a physician. Measurement method: The device measures the distribution of conductivity between the electrodes on the surface of the breast, which is influenced by the distribution of blood flow in the breast tissue. The device utilizes the well-known principle of bioimpedance, measuring the difference in electrical conductivity between healthy and cancerous tissues, as tumor growth significantly increases blood flow. This allows the device to demonstrate a high specificity in breast cancer diagnostics. The results obtained from using the device will enable physicians to enhance the diagnostic quality of fibroepithelial and non-epithelial breast formations, as diagnostic errors occur in 20% to 60% of cases during routine patient examinations. The widespread use of ScanEase scanning technology will reduce the reliance on X-ray mammography and MRI examinations as routine methods for assessing breast health, thereby decreasing radiation exposure. A unique software with a proprietary AI-based algorithm has been developed, enabling users to determine the risk factor for the presence of neoplasms in breast tissue immediately after screening, with an accuracy of up to 85%. The bioimpedance method identifies areas of increased electrical conductivity in a woman's mammary gland, that are formed due to increased blood flow, which is characteristic of tumor development. The interpretation of the obtained data is performed by an AI-based system using the international BI-RADS scale, which indicates a complex 'risk factor' parameter on a specialized point scale. This approach standardizes and digitizes the data description using original algorithms, allowing for an assessment of the patient's risk according to the BI-RADS scale. The method makes it possible to reliably divide patients into 3 groups of threats based on the magnitude of the risk factor: low, medium and high risk. The user of the scanning device can immediately view the results through an app on their smartphone. If a medium or high-risk result is indicated, the person should promptly contact their physician for further diagnosis. In early 2025, the device will enter FDA clinical trials on a fast-track basis for a non-invasive medical trial. Upon final FDA approval, the device will be available for purchase online, with a projected cost of $350. The device can be shared among friends and family, reducing the cost per person using it. - How Artificial Intelligence Intersects with Energy
(NewsUSA) - Artificial intelligence (AI) creates many things, including a staggering demand for energy , and the United States is exploring ways to meet the power requirements of the future, according to experts at the recent AI + Energy Summit in Washington, D.C. The Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP) , a nonprofit and nonpartisan initiative to make recommendations to strengthen America's long-term competitiveness in AI, hosted the Summit, which brought together top policymakers, technologists, and energy industry leaders. SCSP identified 12 key takeaways that should be part of a strategy for how America can maintain its competitive edge at the intersection of AI and energy. Acknowledge the surge in energy demand. AI applications could potentially drive a 160% increase in global energy demand from data centers by 2030. Modernize electrical infrastructure . A smart and flexible grid is essential to handle the demands of AI and renewable energy. Improve energy systems. Using AI to improve energy systems to power more AI could be a key accelerator of progress. Rethink nuclear regulations. Thoughtful regulatory reform could open the door for small nuclear reactors that could power AI data centers. Consider climate benefits. The energy demands of AI could accelerate the transition to clean energy by helping to reshape energy infrastructure. Take risks on emerging technology. Fusion and advanced geothermal technology, which taps into the earth's heat, have great potential payoffs as energy sources. Embrace the moonshot mentality. Create a regulatory system that allows public and private sectors to explore and push boundaries. Support public-private partnerships. Empower the Department of Energy's national labs to act more like startups and partner with the private sector to expand promising energy technology and innovation. Build a pipeline. Encourage the government to focus on early-stage, high-risk research to create a pipeline of technology for private companies to commercialize and scale. Maintain global leadership. Only a handful of AI training clusters exist globally, and where they are located will shape the future of AI development and energy geopolitics, so the U.S. needs to pay attention to these locations and engage allies in order to maintain energy leadership. Create a coherent strategy. Leverage the American innovation culture of risk-taking to promote fundamental research and entrepreneurship in order to continue to compete with China in areas such as fusion and advanced nuclear. Invest in technical education. Developing talent and building a workforce to deploy and maintain next-generation energy systems is especially crucial for fusion and advanced geothermal systems. By focusing on smart regulatory reform, workforce retraining, and global competitiveness, the United States can stay ahead in this evolving landscape, SCSP concluded at the Summit.
