Rome, NY — July 17, 2025 — A mysterious discovery in the Erie Canal has sparked a multi-agency investigation and urgent public appeal for information.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol, deputies were called to the area of South James Street and Muck Road in the City of Rome after a passerby reported spotting an unoccupied kayak floating in the canal. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a single-person orange kayak near the center of the waterway. Nearby, they also located a backpack and a pair of oars bearing the initials "E.W.H."
Given the potential severity of the situation, the case was immediately handed over to the Sheriff's Criminal Investigation Unit and Forensic Identification Unit. The OCSO Marine Patrol and Dive Team were deployed to conduct a thorough search of the canal, but no person was found. Rome Fire Department also used drone-mounted spotlight and thermal imaging to assist in the search, which yielded no further clues.
At this time, there is no confirmed missing person associated with the initials or items found. Authorities are urging anyone with information — especially if they know someone with the initials E.W.H. or who may have been kayaking in the area — to contact the Criminal Investigations Unit at 315-765-2226.
Agencies involved in the search include the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol, Dive Team, Rome Police Department, Rome Fire, and AmCare Ambulance.
Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds.
