Utica Man Arrested After Overnight Stabbing & Shooting Spree Tied to Domestic Dispute

On April 26th, 2025, at approximately 12:30 AM Utica Police and Utica Fire units were dispatched to a residence on the 1400 block of Sunset Ave regarding a stabbing investigation.
Upon arrival,l they were met by several parties who stated that the resident’s ex-husband had arrived on scene and began an argument with her current boyfriend. During the course of the argument, the ex-husband brandished a knife and caused a significant laceration to the boyfriend’s face. Following this, the suspect fled the scene.
Then, at approximately 2:00 AM a ShotSpotter Alert notification showed that multiple gunshots were fired at that same residence. Officers arrived on scene and learned that several shots were fired at the residence and at a vehicle that was parked in the driveway. Information was soon developed that the suspect in the incident was the ex-husband as well.
In speaking with parties present it was learned that the ex-husband arrived back at the residence, once again engaged the individuals there in a physical altercation, and upon exiting the residence, fired multiple shots at the home and vehicle before again fleeing the scene. As officers were on scene victims there began to receive text messages from the suspect threatening further acts of harm.
Officers began to look for the suspect due to the multiple incidents, and at approximately 4:00AM they were dispatched to a residence on the 1500 block of Lincoln Ave regarding a domestic incident. Upon arrival they learned the suspect to be inside, and negotiations began to have him exit. After over and hour and a half, a Patrol Sergeant was able to convince the suspect to exit and he was taken into custody without issue.
The multiple cases were assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and later that morning a search was conducted of the Lincoln Ave residence where a loaded .380 handgun was located.
On the 26th, Paris Smith age 31 of Utica was charged with:
Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree
Criminal Possession of a Firearm
Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree
Assault in the second degree
Aggravated Harassment in the second degree
Harassment in the second degree
Additional charges may be levied after consultation with the District Attorney’s Office.
