On August 16th, 2023 Utica Police units were dispatched to a location on the 1000 block of Oswego St. regarding a menacing investigation. Upon arrival, they learned that a victim had contacted the police after having a knife held to their throat. It was further learned that the suspect and victim were driving together when an argument ensued. The suspect was angry at the victim for a variety of things including not providing him with enough money to purchase narcotics. As the argument escalated the suspect took out a folding knife and held it to the victim’s throat threatening them with it. The victim was ultimately able to flee the vehicle and contact the police. Upon arrival, the officers located the vehicle and the suspect and detained him without incident. A knife was subsequently located on his person and he was taken into custody. On August 23rd, 2023 at approximately 10:45 PM Utica Police units were dispatched to the plaza on the 1500 block of Genesee St regarding several males in possession of handguns standing beside the building. Upon arrival, the males began to disperse and walk in different directions. One of the males began to walk in the roadway, in violation of NYSV&TL sections, and a stop was attempted on this party. As GIVE investigators attempted to stop the male, he fled on foot and a short pursuit was initiated. He was apprehended a short distance away, and while backtracking the route of flight, officers located a loaded .380 handgun that the male had discarded. This was further proven by the use of a thermal imaging device which showed a significant heat signature from the weapon. Upon apprehending the male, they determined him to be a 17 year old juvenile. The male was then transported to the Utica Police Department. While conducting the investigation there, they learned that the juvenile was recently arrested in early 2023 for possession of a separately loaded handgun. PRESS RELEASE On August 26, 2023, at approximately 3:21 p.m., New York State Police at Homer responded to a crash involving a motorcycle on Interstate 81 in the town of Cortlandville. A preliminary investigation indicates that four motorcycles were traveling northbound when for an unknown reason, one went off the roadway near mile marker 51 (just north of Hoxie Gorge), colliding with the guardrail. The operator of the motorcycle, at this time will only be identified as a woman in her 60’s. Both occupants were ejected from the ATV. Miller was airlifted by LifeNet to Albany Medical Center for a serious head injury. Reardon was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Albany Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Hess, age 45, from Cayuta, NY, was operating a 1995 Honda motorcycle eastbound on Smith Road when he struck a deer causing him to exit the south side of the roadway into the ditch.
