Police Investigate Snowmobile Collision in Town of Edwards NY

EDWARDS, N.Y. — New York State Police are investigating a serious snowmobile collision that occurred Sunday afternoon on a trail off County Route 24 in the town of Edwards, St. Lawrence County.

According to State Police, the crash happened on February 1, 2026, at approximately 1:39 p.m., and involved two snowmobiles traveling in opposite directions near the crest of a blind hill.

Investigators determined that a 2016 Arctic Cat, operated by a 16-year-old male with an 18-year-old male passenger, both residents of Edwards, was traveling southwest on the trail. At the same time, a 2021 Polaris Indy operated by Gregory J. Coller, age 50, of Canton, was traveling northeast. Police said both snowmobiles were traveling near the center of the trail when they collided head-on as they approached the hill crest.

Star Lake Rescue and Gouverneur Rescue responded to the scene and provided medical assistance to all involved.

The 18-year-old passenger was transported to Gouverneur Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Coller was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 16-year-old operator of the Arctic Cat sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center, where he is listed in stable but critical condition.
