The New York State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the origin and rightful location of a bronze memorial plaque turned in on October 13, 2025.
A citizen located a heavy bronze memorial placard along Route 365 in the town of Verona. After attempting to research the item and determine its ownership, the individual turned the plaque in to the New York State Police.
The plaque bears the following inscription:
In Memory of Harold B. Cole
Born April 29, 1916
Died serving his country June 8, 1943
“Presented by his comrades”
Due to the weight and construction of the plaque, troopers believe it likely originated from a monument, memorial site, or similar permanent display.
At this time, no information has been located that explains how or why the plaque came to be in Oneida County.
The New York State Police are asking anyone who may recognize this plaque or know of a memorial, monument, or site from which it may have originated to contact the New York State Police at (315) 366-6000 and reference case number NY2501025152.
