Press Release
The New York State Police in SP Auburn are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that occurred on January 27, 2026, at approximately 2:39 p.m. on Ira Station Road in the town of Victory, Cayuga County.
A 2022 Lynx snowmobile, operated by a 49-year-old male, was traveling westbound on a designated snowmobile trail that crosses Ira Station Road. The trail is marked with stop signs on both sides of the roadway. Preliminary investigation indicates the snowmobile did not stop before entering the roadway, crossed the northbound lane, and struck the plow blade of a southbound Town of Victory highway snowplow.
Following the initial impact, the snowmobile continued forward, struck a wooden utility pole with an attached electrical box, and subsequently caught fire.
The snowmobile operator was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where life-saving measures were attempted. He was later pronounced deceased.
The snowplow, a 2019 International Harvester, was operated by a 45-year-old male. The operator was cooperative and showed no signs of impairment.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) responded and processed the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
