Rome, NY – Rome Police are warning residents about an uptick in car thefts targeting Hyundai and Kia vehicles throughout the city and surrounding areas.
Authorities say certain models from the two automakers lack anti-theft technology found in most modern vehicles, making them especially vulnerable to theft methods such as ignition bypassing.
To help protect residents, police are urging Kia and Hyundai owners to take action:
Check with your dealership: Both companies are offering a free software upgrade for eligible vehicles to help reduce theft risks.
Add extra protection: A visible steering wheel lock, such as The Club, can discourage criminals from targeting a vehicle.
Share the warning: Police encourage residents to spread the word to friends, family, and neighbors who own affected models.
In addition, officers remind all vehicle owners to lock their cars, avoid leaving valuables inside, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
The Rome Police Department says the goal is to stop thefts before they happen by raising awareness and encouraging simple preventive steps.
