State Police Investigate Fatal Snowmobile Collision in Herkimer County NY

RUSSIA, N.Y. — New York State Police are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that occurred Monday evening in the town of Russia, Herkimer County.

According to State Police, troopers responded to a report of a snowmobile accident near Riggerman Road on February 2, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m.

A preliminary investigation determined that a single snowmobile, operated by a lone rider, was traveling southbound on a secondary trail near Riggerman Road when the operator lost control. The snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree, causing fatal injuries.

The operator, identified as a 16-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

State Police were assisted at the scene by North Star Ambulance and the Barneveld Fire Department.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
